duwinter

Title: Black Water Hattie (Chapter 9)
Author: duwinter
Fandom: DWP
Pairings: Miranda/Andy, Emily/Serena
Rating: PG-13

Dedication: This story is dedicated to two members of our community, the Raven a.k.a. unfortunateggs who has repeatedly asked for a sequel to my story No Swimmin. (Sorry, It started out to be, but this ain't it.) and mxrolkr, whose wonderful story Cerulean Blue (even though it's not finished, if you haven't read it go do so now) midwifed the concept of this story. The other thing responsible for this story is the random occurrence of three songs that I happened hear back-to-back on my iPod one morning while walking my two dogs in the local dog park. The Charlie Daniel's Band's The Legend of Wooly Swamp Jim Stafford's The Last Chant and Swamp Witch

Setting: AU. This takes place around the time of the film, but as AU's go this one is a bit out there.

Summary: A film Miranda and an AU Andy.

Disclaimer: The Devil Wears Prada and it's characters do not belong to me. No profit being made here. I'm just playing with the characters for a short while and I promise to put them away neatly when I'm through.

Trigger Warnings: Rape. This installment contains a scene of graphic violence and attempted rape. If such things might be triggering or uncomfortable to you as a reader, I would strongly suggest you forgo reading this installment.

Comment: Comments feed the muse and the Muse is always hungry. Remember, a fat muse is a happy and productive muse. Comments and constructive criticism eagerly encouraged.

Historical Song & Dance:The Varsity Drag

Credit where credit is due: I am blessed with an amazing beta: jazwriter. She is simply above and beyond. I am thankful for our association each and every day. My best wishes to her and my lasting gratitude. Without you, this and any other story of mine you have touched would be much poorer.

Answer for question 1675.
duwinter
How do you feel when an adapted film's story deviates from the original material?
Often deviating from the original material changes the story so much it isn't the same story anymore. But to be fair, a film and a novel are two very different mediums and often one does not translate to the other. Often one can not cover the range of character development or emotion in a film that a writer can in a novel. Also book production is not the commercial venture that the production of a film is, so pandering to the audience, as far as what they want to see and find acceptable, is far more necessary in a multimillion dollar film than in the publishing of a novel. All that being said, one of my favorite books (Hannibal, by Thomas Harris) was well handled in the film version up to the ending. Then the entire story was made trite and formulaic because Ridley Scott and the studio were convinced that the audience wouldn't accept the author's dark and unusual ending.

Miranda at Bay

Title: Miranda at Bay

Author: duwinter

Fandom: DWP

Pairing: Miranda/Andy (sort of).

Rating: PG-13

Dedication: In the spirit of Halloween, my all-time favorite holiday! And also as a tribute to every “B” rate horror movie I've ever loved, and, boy, are there a lot of them. I hope the members of our community enjoy this rather dark tale.

Setting: Slight AU, and set about eight months after the events in the movie.

Summery: Andy and Miranda journey together during the end of the world.

Disclaimer: The Devil Wears Prada and it's characters do not belong to me. No profit being made here. I'm just playing with them for a short while and I promise to put them away neatly when I'm through.

Comment: Comments feed the muse and the Muse is always hungry. Remember, a fat muse is a happy and productive muse. Comments and constructive criticism eagerly encouraged.

Very Special Thanks: to punky_96, who conversed with me on the idea of a Halloween challenge and then ran with the idea. You're quite simply the best of the best, kiddo!

Author's Note: I state going in, that I am aware that there is a fair amount of the DWP community that is not going to like this story. Please keep in mind that bizarre twisty-turny stories are sort of what I do. Give it a chance if you want, it might surprise you in the end. That being said, fair warning, Minor Character Death, Major Character Death, Oh hell, let's be real, EVERYBODY DIES!

Author's Note: Unbetaed, may The Powers that Be help you all. All mistakes mine and mine alone.

Fallen Angel, (Part 2 of ?)
duwinter

Title: Fallen Angel

Author: duwinter

Fandom: DWP

Pairing: Eventually Miranda/Andy

Rating: Hard “M”

Setting: The world of the movie, save for a very different Andy.

Summary: The twins runaway from home. Miranda is worried. An AU Andy, who's formative years were quite different than what is normally written in the fandom, returns them home.

Disclaimer: The Devil Wears Prada and it's characters do not belong to me. No profit being made here. I'm just playing with the characters for a short while and I promise to put them away neatly when I'm through.

Dedication: This story is dedicated to the two members of our fanfic community that made the July Fic-A-Thon a reality. Thank you punky_96 & xenavirgin! Congrats Ladies! Your organizational skills have garnered us a plethora of new fics for the second year in a row!

Author's Note: This piece is far darker and gritter that anything I have attempted to write in the past. It is not a happy piece, but it is an idea that wouldn't leave me alone. In it I use language that I am not comfortable with in my normal work-a-day world. I use it because it is how I hear the characters speak in my head. In this reality Miranda is forty-seven, the twins sixteen and Andy twenty-four.

Trigger Warnings: Implied Gang Rape. Implied Hetro Sex, Graphic Violence.

Comment: Comments feed the muse and the Muse is always hungry. Remember, a fat muse is a happy and productive muse. Comments and constructive criticism eagerly encouraged.

Credit Where Credit Is Due: To the two wonderful betas who helped me so much on this installment, meg22591 & punky_96. You two are stars in my book! Thank you so much for both your help and encouragement! This story has been tweaked since the last beta read-through so any and all mistakes are strictly my own.

Part 2

Andy hid in the bar downstairs from her apartment and watched through the grimy window as Nate left to go and gather his 'boys'. As soon as she was sure he was out of sight she left the barroom and quickly returned to the apartment. On to more of the tale...Collapse )

Mid-morning on Friday Cassidy had a free period between her geography and civics classes. She took the time to borrow one of the bicycles that students at the school had available for them. She rode to town and bought a bouquet of mixed flowers at the local supermarket before riding to the cemetery where she'd had her adventure. Entering was easier this time, as during the day the gates to the place were open so that people of the town could visit the resting places of their loved ones.On to more of the tale...Collapse )

Summary: Andy spends an interesting afternoon with the Devil.

Disclaimer: The novel The Devil Wears Prada (2003) was written by Lauren Weisberger and published by Broadway Books. The Film, made in 2006, was directed by David Frankel and produced by Wendy Finerman and Keren Rosenfelt. Ms. Weisberger's novel was adapted for the screen by Aline Brosh MeKenna. It starred our two favorite ladies, Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.

Bedazzled (the 1967 film version) was written by Peter Cook and Dudley Moore (both of who also starred in the film) and was directed and produced by Stanley Donen.

Bedazzled (the 2000 film version) is a remake of the 1967 version. The remake screenplay was written by Larry Gelbart, Harold Ramis and Peter Tolan. The film was directed by Harold Ramis and produced by Harold Ramis and Trevor Albert. It starred Brendan Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley.

I of Newton (Second Segment of Episode 12 of Season 1 of the 1985/86 version of the television series, The Twilight Zone) original aired on television on December 13th, 1985. It was written by Joe Haldeman and directed by Kenneth Gilbert. (If you find yourself with a spare nine minutes, I find this a very humorous piece of television and it is available here.)

The Devil Wears Prada and it's characters, neither version of Bedazzeled and their characters, nor I of Newton and it's characters do not belong to me. This spoof on the above materials is written strictly for the purpose of the enjoyment of The Devil Wears Prada's fan fiction audience. I freely admit to both co-opting and paraphrasing dialog from the films. I do so because I enjoyed them so much and believe my audience will likewise enjoy the witty banter. I'm just playing with the characters for a short while and I promise to put them away neatly when I'm through. No money being made here. Please don't sue, you'd be very disappointed when you found out I don't own anything worth taking.

Dedication: This story is dedicated to the two members of our fanfic community that made the July Fic-A-Thon a reality. Thank you punky_96 & xenavirgin! Without the two of you this gathering of great fics would never have happened!

Extremely agitated, Andy again finds herself in the Devil's office and witnesses the Devil engaged in berating two figures standing before her desk. “And what do I have to work with?” she demands of the two figures. “Sloth, you're just lazy, and Greed? It's the House of Representatives I sent you to work on! It's not a stretch that you should be able to deliver. There are two hundred and thirty-five of them, and you only managed to get three-quarters? Both of you make me sick! Get out of my sight.”

Special Auction Thanks: I'd like to bring attention to the fact that our own pdt_bear, while not bidding on stories in the auction, did support the cause by agreeing to match the winning bids on at least two of the DWP stories auctioned off. Also a very special thanks to waltzmatildah who runs the truly unique humanitarian effort FandomAid

Comments: Comments and constructive criticism eagerly encouraged and appreciated!

A/N 1: For the purposes of this story, all events are taking place before the Congressionally directed repeal of the Army's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy. Truth be told, when I started this project I did not believe that President Obama, even with hard work and the best of intentions, would manage to get the repeal of this outdated and idiotic bias past the hidebound idiots and political hacks that serve in the Congress and Senate of my country.

A/N 2: In this story Andy serves in the 192nd Supply Regiment of the Ohio National Guard. I know that members of the Ohio National Guard have served bravely in the conflicts overseas. I honor that service. The 192nd Supply Regiment and the 161st Military Police Company, in which both DeSaix and Scruggs serve, are however, fictitious units and do not exist.

A/N 4: There is a a very unpleasant character residing in this story. He is racist, misogynistic, corrupt, and one of those individuals the world would truly be a better place without. He is a fictional character and his views in no way express the views of the author of this piece.

A/N 5: The President and the First Lady (both of whom I admire greatly) have become characters in this story. I try to write them carefully and I mean them no disrespect.

Very Special Thanks: to All hail the mighty and powerful beta goddesspeetsden, bow, offer sacrifice, and do proper homage. Thanks, Peet, you saved my bacon when it needed saving!Very Special Thanks: to the wonderful ragelikeafire who gave more than I can say to the development and success of this story. One of the tables she was responsible for serving was being exceedingly difficult. The fat middle-aged man at the table had pinched her on the ass and the woman at the table was determined not to be satisfied with anything placed before her. The seating hostess spoke to her in passing, “I've just seated table four. She wants a Champagne Cocktail. I've already placed the order with the bar.”
